CUSC surveys are administered between January and March to a random sample of 1,000 students. Universities are included in the survey by first joining CUSC as a member institution (October) then indicating intent to participate in the survey. Participating universities have the option of administering the surveys to their students using a traditional pen and paper survey (sent by mail) or a web-based version (sent by email). The intent of CUSC is to only offer the web-based version as of 2009.

CUSC memberships are renewed annually and run from October 1st to September 30th. Membership in CUSC provides the following benefits to the institution:

1. eligibility to participate in the CUSC survey of that membership year;
2. eligibility to attend and participate as voting members in the CUSC fall and spring meetings;
